pastel on paper

I developed a technique of pastel on dark paper in which the texture of the paper is allowed to show through. The landscapes in particular use this dark texture to represent the various textures of nature - rocks, foliage, grass - and of course built materials such as stone and concrete. The result is a style that I have not seen elsewhere. If you have, please let me know!

The landscapes fall into various themes - Sydney bush, The Kimberley, European cityscapes, Antarctic seascapes and tropical seascapes.

The abstracts employ the same technique. Although the colour-fields of Mark Rothko were clearly my inspiration, I endeavoured to imbue the works with the colours and 'horizontality' of the Australian landscape.
