The Short Prince

The Short Prince is an adaptation of the classic children's story, The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint Exupéry. The book, music and lyrics were written by myself.

I have been charmed and inspired by The Little Prince ever since I first read it more than a decade ago. In particular, the richness of the ideas continues to touch me in a way that I cannot easily identify. In adapting the story I strived to transport that elusive magic with as little damage as possible. I hope I have succeeded. I found that by condensing the work to 10 minutes I had reduced the story to little more than the ideas themselves; this approach I felt was ideally suited to the continuous-music form.

The work was produced as part of Short Sweet+Song Sydney in 2008, beautifully directed by Maarten Mourik with a wonderful cast. Musical direction was by Bev Kennedy.
